Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a well-established, non-invasive treatment modality that has been used for improving fine lines, dyspigmentation, and other signs of photodamage. It may also be used to decrease or reverse effects of sun damage on the skin.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan in the body, has been widely studied for its tremendous potential to bind water allowing the skin to retain moisture and maintain elasticity. Its Topical application produces anti-wrinkle effects.
A study investigated the safety and efficacy of 2% 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) gel with hyaluronic acid (ALA-HA) and light-emitting diode-red light (LED-RL) for facial rejuvenation. Clinical assessments and digital skin analysis of rhytides, pore size, and erythema were done to conclude the observations.
The observations were as follows-
Thus safety and efficacy of the novel preparation of a photodynamic gel with HA and subsequent activation with LED-RL were confirmed.
